2/18/2021 0 Comments Solar Cells: Cost And BenefitsSolar power for homes has many uses and benefits. One such benefit is that it creates a cleaner environment and at the same time saving you thousands on your power bills. Solar power is heat and radiant energy from the Sun, which is harnessed utilizing a wide range of ever-changing technologies including photovoltaics (using solar cells), solar thermal power, solar thermal energy and artificial Photosynthesis. Solar power is also considered one of the most environmentally friendly forms of energy available. Although solar power for homes has many advantages, there are some major limitations. For instance, in some areas, especially in cold environments where solar energy might be abundant, solar thermal systems can create an unacceptable amount of thermal energy which may in turn significantly increase the cost of electricity. Also, solar thermal systems cannot be used on large-scale for powering whole states or countries, although research and development efforts are currently underway to overcome such challenges. As the utility prices continue to rise annually, the savings from going solar also increase. Another limitation of solar energy is that it only produces energy when sunlight is directly exposed to the sun. Photovoltaic cells on a solar panel are generally made from silicon, which is a highly effective absorber of solar radiation. However, these photovoltaic cells are still rather inefficient at converting solar radiation into electricity as they only absorb 80% of the absorbed radiation. Scientists and researchers are currently working on methods that can greatly improve the conversion efficiency of solar PV cells, but the current state of the art is not well suited for powering massive establishments like a national power plant. Solar cookers are another alternative energy source that has vastly expanded in use over the past decade. These types of devices convert sunlight into energy similar to that found in fossil fuels. Although they do operate on a large scale, they are extremely efficient when compared to fossil fuels that are far more plentiful. Solar cookers can power a single household or can be used to provide the equivalent for an entire country. The solar pv industry is in its early stages of development. This is primarily due to the fact that researchers are required to carefully study the various factors that affect solar pv production and how they can be optimized. Many of these factors are relatively unknown, making solar pv technology somewhat expensive to implement at a commercial level. Still, many analysts feel that the costs and risks of solar or are outweighed by the benefits. In the long run, solar power stations will generate more income for countries that are willing to commit to investing in such technologies. One of the most promising applications of solar power systems is residential energy production. If large enough solar cells are erected on a roof, then power systems can supply all of a household's needs. Some analysts feel that such residential systems could eventually replace traditional power systems completely. Others think that it will take decades before residential solar cells can compete with commercial grade solar cells. Regardless of whether you agree with this assessment, the fact remains that it has become much easier to install large solar cells on a home or even a business property. Advances in solar cells and solar power systems are sure to continue to make solar cells cheaper and more efficient.
